What is Equine Massage?
Massage is the application of hands-on techniques that are used to relieve tension, muscle spasm and improve the horse's overall performance, as well as aid in rehabilitation from trauma and injury.
Massage can benefit horses and ponies in all life stages, whether they are high-performance competitors or relaxed family "pets".
How Can Massage Help My Horse?
Does your horse have problems with.....
Balance & Coordination Bending & Flexing Girth Discomfort or "Cinchiness" "Off" for no apparent reason Improper or Changing Leads Sore Back Restricted Shoulder Motion Turning on Front End Gait Stiffness
.........massage can probably help! Over half (60%) of a horse's total body weight is comprised of muscle, and most motion problems originate within this system. Another often overlooked fact is this: A horse cannot move freely with a stiff, tight rider on his back--maybe you need a massage yourself!
The Benefits of Equine Sports Massage Are Many.......
- Massage therapy is a beneficial complement to
chiropractic adjustments for your horse. Massage performed before an adjustment will help the chiropractor to manipulate the equine skeleton. Massage carried out after an adjustment will help the horse's muscles to hold the new alignment.
- Complementary therapies, such as massage, can
provide a more complete and lasting resolution of clinical symptoms.
- Enhances muscle tone and increase range of motion.
- Assists in balancing the body by treating the body as a
whole, rather than each individual part.
- Reduces inflammation and swelling in the joints,
thereby alleviating pain.
- Promotes healing by increasing the flow of nutrients to
the muscles and carrying away excessive fluid and toxins.
- Creates a positive effect on the contractual and release
process of the muscles. When tension is released, muscles relax.
- Stimulates circulation by "defrosting frozen muscles",
thereby releasing endorphins (natural pain killers). Improved circulation also increases the excretion of toxins through the skin.
- Helps to extend the health, productivity and lifespan of
the horse.
- Increases the potential performance and endurance of
the horse.
- Helps maintain the WHOLE body in better physical
condition.

A PRE-EVENT SPORTS MASSAGE loosens, warms, and readies the muscles for an event.
A POST-EVENT SPORTS MASSAGE relieves muscle pain and stiffness by returning the muscles to a normal state, much faster than if they had been allowed to go without a massage. After vigorous exercise, dehydration takes place in the horse and, with the loss of fluids, it is harder for him to cool down.

Disclaimer: Massage is not a substitute for veterinary care; it is used in addition to standard medical treatments. Massage should always be performed by a trained and certified person. A certified practitioner of animal massage is trained in anatomy, movement and observation and may decline to proceed with a massage treatment if the health of the horse is at risk.
Animals suffering from fever, shock, infection, open wounds, rashes, lumps and immune disease should not be treated unless a veterinarian is consulted.
